Xreal, Google’s smartglasses partner, thinks it has finally mastered this notoriously tricky industry

The smart glasses market has long been a challenging landscape for tech innovators, often resembling a financial pit with substantial investments yielding little return. The concept is enticing: imagine a lightweight device that allows users to engage with mobile computing without the need to constantly check their phones. This dream captivates many, particularly in Silicon Valley. However, the reality has been fraught with difficulties, as Chi Xu, CEO and founder of Xreal, pointed out during a recent appearance at Google’s I/O conference. Xu emphasized the struggles within the industry, stating, "Everybody’s losing money." Despite these challenges, he introduced Xreal’s latest initiative, Project Aura, which aims to develop a functional set of XR glasses that genuinely appeal to consumers. For years, the barriers to success in smart glasses have been evident: designs that are often bulky, uncomfortable, and socially awkward, combined with software that offers minimal benefits. Yet, many industry experts, including Xu, believe they are on the verge of a breakthrough. The recent partnership between Meta and Ray-Ban, which has resulted in a successful line of smart glasses, is seen as a catalyst for change, even as Meta’s Reality Labs continues to operate at a significant loss. Xreal is optimistic that advancements in both hardware and software are paving the way for leadership in this competitive arena. Xu outlined the essential components for success: "You need all the key pieces ready — you need the hardware ready, the operating system needs to be ready, and then you need a great user interface." The Aura glasses feature wired connections with OLED displays embedded directly into the frames, allowing users to watch high-resolution videos seamlessly. While the glasses are tethered to a compact device, referred to as a “puck,” which serves as a mini-computer, this setup enables a richer experience. Users gain access to innovative applications, such as an immersive Google Maps interface, VR YouTube content, and even a unique painting application that utilizes hand tracking for creating holographic imagery. Xu envisions the Aura not just as a tool for entertainment, but also as a versatile device for productivity. He remarked, “It’s not just about watching an NBA game in a hologram; you could also go to a coffee shop and do some work.” Currently, these glasses are limited to developers, but Xreal plans to launch them for general consumers later this year. In addition to the product launch, Xreal is preparing for an IPO expected before the end of 2026. Xu expressed confidence in the company’s financial future, aiming to turn a profit by improving gross margins while decreasing marketing and sales costs. He noted, “Next year is the year when we could actually break even.”
