Spain’s Xoople raises $130 million Series B to map the Earth for AI

Xoople, a pioneering Spanish startup, has successfully raised $130 million in a Series B funding round, aiming to transform how businesses harness satellite data for artificial intelligence. Founded in 2019, the company is on a mission to create a satellite constellation that will provide highly accurate data tailored for deep learning models, addressing the growing demand for precise information in the private sector. The funding round was led by Nazca Capital and included contributions from notable investors such as MCH Private Equity, CDTI, Buenavista Equity Partners, and Endeavor Catalyst. CEO Fabrizio Pirondini confirmed the investment, underscoring the startup's ambition to become a key source of ground truth data for enterprises. In addition to securing funding, Xoople has partnered with L3Harris Technologies, a prominent U.S. space and defense contractor, to develop advanced sensors for its spacecraft. These sensors are expected to deliver data that significantly surpasses the quality of existing monitoring systems, although specifics about the satellites remain undisclosed. Despite the high costs associated with developing such sophisticated systems, Xoople is determined to continue raising capital to support its expansive vision. While the exact valuation remains under wraps, Pirondini mentioned that the company is now in the 'unicorn territory,' having raised a total of $225 million so far. Xoople's emphasis on data quality sets it apart in a competitive landscape populated by established players like Vantor, Planet, BlackSky, and Airbus, all of which are already operational in satellite imaging and AI-focused datasets. What distinguishes Xoople is its strategic focus on embedding its data solutions within enterprise ecosystems, enabling businesses to offer these services directly to their customers. Potential applications of Xoople’s technology include aiding government agencies in monitoring transportation networks and assessing damage from natural disasters, as well as supporting agribusinesses in tracking crop health and helping large corporations oversee infrastructure projects and supply chains. Industry expert Aravind Ravichandran from TerraWatch Space remarked on Xoople's proactive distribution strategy, which involves integrating with platforms like Microsoft and Esri, even before establishing its own data supply. This approach positions them uniquely in the market, although they will face competition from Google, which has already made significant strides in geospatial AI modeling. While it remains to be seen how Xoople will balance raw data provision with the development of analytical tools, Pirondini is optimistic about building what he calls 'Earth's System of Record,' anticipating the creation of a comprehensive AI world model in collaboration with various partners.
