Xcode 26.3 adds support for Claude, Codex, and other agentic tools via MCP

Apple has unveiled an updated version of Xcode, its integrated development environment (IDE) designed for creating applications across its platforms, including iPhone and Mac. The standout feature of Xcode 26.3 is the incorporation of sophisticated agentic coding tools, such as OpenAI's Codex and Claude Agent. This version introduces a user-friendly side panel that allows developers to assign tasks to AI agents, monitor their progress, and track modifications seamlessly. This innovation is made possible through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard designed to facilitate interaction between AI agents and external tools as well as structured resources. Xcode now serves as an MCP endpoint, providing a suite of machine-invocable interfaces that enable AI tools like Codex and Claude Agent to access essential IDE functions, including file management, document searches, and project configurations. While previous iterations of Xcode included some AI chat functionalities, this release significantly enhances the depth of integration, granting these tools a richer experience with the IDE's capabilities. Notably, although OpenAI and Anthropic's models are prominently featured in Xcode's settings, the MCP also allows for the integration of other compatible tools, including options for running models locally. This update marks a significant step in Apple's ongoing AI initiative, building upon earlier enhancements introduced in Xcode 26, which improved code completion with a local model developed by Apple and provided comprehensive support for chat interfaces with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude. For developers seeking increased agent-like functionalities, prior reliance on third-party tools was often necessary, which sometimes limited their effectiveness due to restricted access to IDE features. As the release candidate for Xcode 26.3 approaches, with the final version expected soon, users can look forward to a more integrated and powerful development experience.
