xAI’s legal chief steps down after whirlwind year

Robert Keele has announced his resignation as the head of legal at xAI after just over a year in the role. In his recent statement, he expressed a desire to dedicate more time to his children, stating, "I love my two toddlers and I don’t get to see them enough." Keele's departure comes amid a recognition of differing perspectives with xAI’s founder, Elon Musk, who has yet to publicly address Keele’s exit. Despite calling his tenure at the AI startup "incredible" and describing his collaboration with Musk as "the adventure of a lifetime," Keele noted the difficulty of balancing family life with his demanding position. His announcement was met with an outpouring of support on social media from colleagues and fellow parents alike. Joining xAI in May 2024 as its inaugural legal head, Keele previously launched a brief legal venture, Keele Law, which lasted only three weeks. He had described the opportunity at xAI as too significant to pass up, expressing enthusiasm for his role at the time. Under Keele's leadership, xAI experienced substantial growth, including a notable $6 billion Series B funding round announced shortly after his arrival, which brought the company’s valuation to $24 billion. In March, xAI made headlines by acquiring Musk's social media platform, X, in a deal that reportedly valued xAI at $80 billion. Lily Lim, who has a background as a rocket scientist at NASA, will succeed Keele. Lim joined xAI in late 2024 and has specialized in privacy and intellectual property law. Her impressive career includes legal roles at various firms and tech companies like ServiceNow. Keele's resignation highlights a trend of executive turnover within Musk's companies, as seen recently with the departure of X CEO Linda Yaccarino and several Tesla executives. Musk has a reputation for demanding long hours from employees, even suggesting that they sleep in the office if necessary, a practice he adopted during the acquisition of X. Some newer startups are mirroring this approach to maintain competitiveness, including AI coding startup Cognition, whose CEO has expressed skepticism about the concept of work-life balance.
