Elon Musk's xAI sues former engineer over leaking Grok secrets and selling to OpenAI

Elon Musk's AI venture, xAI, has initiated legal proceedings against a former engineer, claiming he misappropriated sensitive information regarding its Grok chatbot prior to his transition to competing firm OpenAI. The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in California, focuses on Xuechen Li, who became part of xAI's technical team in early 2023. This group, comprising 20 members, was tasked with the development and training of Grok's AI models. According to court documents, Li reportedly liquidated $7 million in company stock before resigning in July, with plans to join OpenAI in August. xAI contends that Li copied confidential data from his company laptop to a personal device before his exit. The complaint alleges that he took measures to hide his actions, including deleting browser history and system logs, as well as renaming and compressing files to obscure their origin. In an August 14 meeting, Li is said to have acknowledged taking documents, although additional materials were later found on his devices. The startup asserts that the information Li allegedly took pertains to advanced AI technologies that could provide OpenAI with a significant competitive advantage over products like ChatGPT. As a result, xAI is pursuing financial damages and a restraining order to prevent Li from starting his new position at OpenAI. This legal battle highlights the fierce competition for talent in the AI industry, as well as the growing legal tensions between Musk and his former associates. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, has publicly criticized the organization following the release of ChatGPT in 2022, claiming a departure from its original non-profit intentions. Earlier this year, he also filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft, accusing them of prioritizing profit motives, leading to a countersuit from OpenAI for harassment. Additionally, xAI has launched a separate lawsuit in Texas against OpenAI and Apple, alleging monopolistic practices concerning AI chatbots on Apple devices.
