In a significant shift of strategy, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence venture, xAI, has announced the termination of approximately 500 employees from its data annotation team. This decision, reported by Business Insider, was communicated to staff late on Friday and predominantly affects those who played pivotal roles in training the company's generative AI chatbot, Grok. According to the internal email shared with employees, xAI is redirecting its efforts from developing general AI tutors to honing in on specialist AI tutors. The message stated, "After a thorough review of our Human Data efforts, we’ve decided to accelerate the expansion and prioritization of our specialist AI tutors, while scaling back our focus on general AI tutor roles." Consequently, many generalist positions are being eliminated as part of this new direction. Affected employees were informed that their access to company systems would be revoked immediately, although they would continue to receive salaries until their contracts end or until November 30. This restructuring comes as xAI aims to enhance its investment in specialized AI tutors across various sectors, including video gaming, web design, data science, medicine, and STEM fields. Earlier this month, xAI had disclosed plans to expand its team of specialist AI tutors tenfold, touting their contributions as "adding huge value." Interestingly, the layoffs were preceded by reports that senior data annotation staff had their Slack accounts deactivated prior to the official announcement. In other developments related to AI, Musk has recently highlighted the capabilities of Grok, emphasizing its predictive abilities. He encouraged users to engage with Grok's functionalities on his official X account, promoting features such as the Grok Expert mode for serious predictions. Musk remarked, "The ability to predict the future is the best measure of intelligence," while introducing the FutureX platform, which assesses how effectively AI models can forecast real-world events across a variety of topics, including politics and sports.
