XAI reorganizes its engineering team ahead of SpaceX IPO

As Elon Musk's xAI deepens its integration with SpaceX in anticipation of a significant IPO, the artificial intelligence firm is implementing substantial changes to its engineering team, as detailed in an internal memo obtained by Business Insider. SpaceX executive Michael Nicholls emphasized that the company is "clearly behind" its rivals and is making swift moves to catch up. Nicholls, who serves as the senior vice president of Starlink at SpaceX, has now taken on the role of xAI's president. Following SpaceX's acquisition of xAI earlier this year, the company is gearing up to file for an initial public offering that could potentially value it at over $2 trillion. In this competitive landscape, xAI is undergoing multiple organizational changes to keep pace with industry leaders such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The company has seen a number of its cofounders and senior leaders depart, with the latest being Ross Nordeen, once a close associate of Musk. In response, Musk is employing strategies similar to those used at Tesla to rebuild xAI from the ground up, all while managing ongoing departures and layoffs. The urgency is palpable, given the looming IPO that could elevate the company's valuation dramatically. Devendra Chaplot, a former researcher from Facebook and Thinking Machines Labs, has recently joined xAI and will focus on pre-training, which involves teaching models to recognize patterns from vast datasets like text and images. Aman Madaan will be in charge of the model factory and tooling, which encompasses the infrastructure and data pipelines necessary for AI model development. Aditya Gupta will oversee post-training and reinforcement learning, ensuring the models are fine-tuned for practical applications. Additional leadership roles have been filled by former employees from major tech firms. For instance, Beibin Li, who previously worked at Microsoft and Meta, will lead post-training efforts for Grok Code, while Xuhui Jia and Yukun Zhu will handle video and image training, bringing expertise from Google DeepMind. The product team, which includes Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsburg from AI coding company Cursor, will manage various projects under the Grok brand. Regarding infrastructure, Jake Palmer will manage physical aspects, while Daniel Dueri, SpaceX's director of software engineering, will oversee compute infrastructure. However, Nicholls highlighted in the memo that xAI's current compute training performance is "embarrassingly low," and significant improvements are expected in the coming months. The organizational changes are already in effect, with staff being assigned titles that more accurately reflect their roles. Musk had previously reorganized xAI in February following its acquisition, and since January, eight founding engineers have parted ways with the company, including notable figures such as Nordeen and Guodong Zhang. In light of these departures, xAI's structure has been in a state of continual adjustment, with Musk directly managing numerous reports. Engineers from Tesla and SpaceX have also been brought in to facilitate the transition at xAI's Palo Alto office. The company has seen a significant reduction in its workforce since February, with layoffs affecting teams working on projects like Grok Imagine and Macrohard. Recently, several members of the recruiting team have also been let go. Musk has acknowledged that xAI was not initially constructed properly and is now being rebuilt from the ground up. He has expressed interest in revisiting previous candidates who were overlooked in the hiring process, indicating that there are many talented individuals who were not given a chance at xAI previously.
