Elon Musk’s xAI loses co-founder Tony Wu in latest senior departure

In a significant shake-up, xAI, the artificial intelligence venture founded by Elon Musk, has seen the departure of co-founder Tony Wu. Wu shared his resignation on Monday, marking the latest exit among the startup's founding members. His announcement follows the departures of key figures such as Igor Babuschkin, Kyle Kosic, and Christian Szegedy, while Greg Yang had previously indicated he would reduce his involvement to focus on his health issues related to Lyme disease. In a reflective statement on social media platform X, Wu expressed, "It's time for my next chapter. It is an era with full possibilities: a small team armed with AIs can move mountains and redefine what's possible." His exit comes at a critical time for xAI, which is currently grappling with backlash from consumers and scrutiny from regulators in various nations. The company's Grok AI chatbot and its image generation capabilities have faced criticism for enabling the creation and distribution of non-consensual explicit deepfake images, including those involving minors. Launched in 2023, xAI was established to challenge industry giants like OpenAI and Google, with an ambitious mission to "understand the true nature of the universe," as stated on its website. In a recent development, Musk announced that his aerospace company SpaceX has acquired xAI, potentially setting the stage for a monumental initial public offering. This transaction is reportedly the largest merger in history, valuing SpaceX at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion, as per documents reviewed by CNBC. Notably, Musk had previously merged xAI with X in a multibillion-dollar arrangement disclosed last March.
