X launches About This Account to help users identify real profiles: All to know

X has introduced a new feature designed to enhance transparency and help users identify genuine accounts on the platform. Named 'About This Account,' this tool provides valuable insights, including the account's location, username change history, original join date, and the method through which the app was initially downloaded. Nikita Bier, the head of product at X, confirmed the global rollout of this feature on Sunday, emphasizing its significance in maintaining the platform's integrity, which he likened to a global town square. To access this information, users can simply tap on the sign-up date displayed on profiles. Bier also indicated that X plans to broaden the array of verification tools available to users, empowering them to better evaluate the authenticity of the content they encounter. Additionally, accounts located in regions where online speech may pose legal or personal risks will have new privacy controls, allowing them to limit visibility regarding their location. The overarching goal of this initiative is to mitigate inauthentic engagements, particularly from bots that attempt to imitate real users. This challenge has been a persistent issue for X and is anticipated to grow more complex as AI-generated content becomes more prevalent. The initial announcement of this feature dates back to October when Bier shared that X was testing the display of these details on his profile and those of company employees. By making this information publicly accessible, the company aims to equip users with the tools needed to discern trustworthy accounts from those that may spread misinformation or manipulate discussions. Bier expressed gratitude to the engineers who contributed to this significant project as the update begins its global rollout, providing users with more context to inform their interactions on the platform.
