X launches standalone XChat app on iOS

X has introduced its standalone messaging application, XChat, which officially launched on Friday for iOS devices. This innovative app enables users to communicate seamlessly with their X contacts through messaging, file sharing, audio and video calls, and group chats. The development of XChat began earlier this year with a beta testing phase involving a select group of users. Their feedback was instrumental in shaping the app's features and user experience. This initiative is a significant part of X's strategic vision, as the company aims to expand beyond its social networking roots into a multifaceted service platform that includes messaging and potential payment solutions. Interestingly, the release of XChat marks a departure from Elon Musk’s initial ambition to create an “everything app” that would consolidate various services, including messaging, payments, shopping, and AI capabilities into a single interface. Instead, X is now adopting a suite of apps to enhance user engagement and service access. The launch of XChat, alongside other apps from xAI, aims to create multiple touchpoints for consumers. At its launch, XChat boasts an array of features designed with user privacy in mind. These include options to edit and delete messages for all chat participants, disappearing messages, and the ability to block screenshots. X asserts that the app is free from advertisements and tracking, with all communications being end-to-end encrypted and safeguarded with a PIN. However, security experts have raised concerns regarding the app's encryption capabilities, suggesting that XChat may not match the security offered by other popular encrypted messaging platforms, such as Signal. As the app becomes widely available, experts will reevaluate its security measures to ensure they meet user expectations. In addition to facilitating private messaging, XChat will also take over as the new hub for X's Communities, which are being discontinued due to low engagement and high spam levels. This transition could potentially drive an increase in downloads as community members migrate to the new platform. Looking ahead, X's lead designer, Benji Taylor, hinted that this is merely the start for XChat, with more exciting updates and features planned for the future.
