X to launch marketplace for buying inactive handles

In a significant move, X is set to introduce a dedicated marketplace for users to buy inactive usernames, specifically targeting its Premium subscribers. This new platform will feature both free and paid options for acquiring eligible handles, with rare usernames potentially costing thousands or even more. The marketplace will categorize usernames into two main types: ‘Priority’ handles, which include full names and multi-word phrases, and ‘Rare’ handles, known for their brevity or cultural relevance. Premium+ and Premium Business subscribers can request ‘Priority’ handles at no cost. Once a request is accepted, X will seamlessly transfer the handle to the user without any charges. However, if a subscriber decides to downgrade or cancel their subscription, the handle will revert back to their account after a 30-day grace period. Some examples of ‘Priority’ handles include usernames like @GabrielJones and @PizzaEater. The introduction of this marketplace is part of X’s strategy to enhance revenue through direct transactions, especially as the platform grapples with a declining advertising business. X has clarified that not all requests will be granted, and the review process for handle requests typically takes up to three business days. ‘Rare’ handles, such as @Pizza and @Tom, will not be accessible through standard requests. Instead, they will be made available through public drops and exclusive direct purchases, which are invitation-only. During public drops, multiple users can apply for the same handle, and selection criteria will consider past contributions and engagement levels on the platform. For direct purchases, the pricing will vary based on factors like the popularity and cultural significance of the handle. Once a user acquires a handle, it remains theirs even if their Premium subscription lapses. This approach aims to mitigate issues related to bot spam and misuse, ensuring a fair and controlled distribution process. Users interested in specific inactive handles not listed in the marketplace can express their interest to be notified if the handle becomes available.
