X launches a History tab for bookmarks, likes, videos, and articles

The social media platform X is evolving into a comprehensive 'save-it-for-later' solution with the introduction of its new History tab. This feature aggregates bookmarks, likes, videos, and articles, making it easier for users to access their favorite content all in one convenient location. Currently rolling out on iOS, X's head of product, Nikitia Bier, highlights the History tab as an innovative way for users to keep tabs on content they want to revisit. With this update, the existing Bookmarks button in the app's left-side menu has been transformed into the History tab. This new section categorizes saved content into four distinct tabs—bookmarks, likes, videos, and articles—allowing for effortless navigation back to previously enjoyed material. While bookmarks and likes are manually saved by users, the videos and articles sections will automatically populate based on the content viewed by users on the platform. Importantly, the History section remains private, ensuring that users can curate their own content without external visibility. This new functionality lends a more browser-like experience to X, enabling users to revisit previously engaged content, even if they didn't actively choose to save it. The update consolidates features that were previously scattered across the app, streamlining access to bookmarks, which were once in the main menu, and likes, which were tucked away in user profiles. Furthermore, this strategic enhancement could promote increased engagement with X's long-form article feature, which the company aims to position as a platform for businesses and creators to share in-depth updates beyond the standard 280-character limit. As users browse articles, they essentially create a personalized newsfeed directly within the app. This update comes at a time when web publishers are facing decreased referral traffic from major platforms like Facebook and Google, prompting X to seize the opportunity to attract more publishers and creators to its platform, where content distribution and discovery are inherently integrated.
