In response to the growing sophistication of AI-generated bots, X, the platform led by Elon Musk, is set to introduce a new feature aimed at bolstering user trust. The initiative will enhance user profiles by revealing additional information about account holders, providing insights into who users are truly interacting with. Nikita Bier, X's head of product, announced that the platform will start testing the display of various profile details, including account creation dates, geographical locations, and the history of username changes. This move aims to help users assess the authenticity of accounts they engage with, especially in an era where misinformation is rampant. The rationale behind this feature is straightforward: by offering more context about users, individuals can better differentiate between genuine accounts and potential bots or malicious actors. For instance, if a profile claims to be based in a specific U.S. state yet shows evidence of being registered overseas, users might question its legitimacy. Likewise, inconsistencies in app download locations can raise further doubts about an account’s authenticity. Bier revealed that the initial rollout will focus on profiles of X employees to gather feedback before expanding to the wider user base. While privacy concerns were addressed, with users having the option to opt out of displaying certain information, Bier highlighted that opting out might lead to the visibility of privacy settings on profiles. Additionally, to mitigate risks related to disclosing sensitive location data, adjustments will be made to display regional rather than country-level information in areas where safety is a concern. This strategy of augmenting social media profiles is not unique to X. Similar features are already available on platforms like Instagram, where users can view details about how long an account has existed and its geographical basis. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, emphasized that such transparency helps users make informed decisions about whom to trust. Should X's new feature be widely implemented, it could represent a significant step toward rebuilding trust in online interactions, despite the persistent challenges posed by scammers and bots. This announcement comes on the heels of X's recent efforts to clean up the platform, which included the removal of 1.7 million bots involved in spamming activities.
