X is shutting down Communities because of low usage and lots of spam

In a significant shift for its platform, X has announced the impending closure of its Communities feature, initially launched in 2021 when the company was still known as Twitter. The feature aimed to connect users with shared interests, but it has faced overwhelming challenges, particularly concerning spam and low usage rates. Nikitia Bier, X's head of product, detailed the decision, revealing that Communities had attracted less than 0.4% of users while simultaneously generating 80% of spam reports, financial scams, and malware incidents. "While Communities had an ambitious vision, they ultimately failed to serve their intended purpose," Bier stated. Instead of fostering genuine connections, many Communities devolved into channels promoting external creators, often through compensated content sharing known as clipping. Bier compared the unsuccessful Communities project to a "Temu version of subreddits," highlighting its shortcomings compared to more established platforms like Reddit. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that a few successful Communities will need to find new homes, given their potential. The shutdown is scheduled for May 6, 2026, providing Community administrators time to transition their members to XChat, the platform's upcoming messaging service. This service will offer new features, including “joinable” links for group chats, allowing users to easily share and promote their discussions within the app. To further enhance user engagement, X has recently rolled out Custom Timelines for Premium subscribers, enabling users to curate their feeds based on interests. As X continues its rapid development cycle, launching multiple new features weekly, the company remains committed to evolving its community engagement strategies while addressing the shortcomings of its former Communities feature.
