Grok AI obscene content issue: X accepts mistake, removes 600 accounts; assures compliance

X, the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter, has acknowledged its oversight in managing obscene content associated with the Grok AI chatbot. In response to concerns raised by India's IT Ministry, the platform has removed approximately 3,500 pieces of objectionable content and deleted over 600 accounts. This decisive action comes as governments worldwide increase their scrutiny of generative AI technologies regarding content moderation and data safety. The Indian government had expressed alarms about the misuse of Grok for generating non-consensual explicit images. Following these warnings, X assured compliance with local laws and stated that it would enforce stricter controls on obscene imagery moving forward. The platform's Safety handle emphasized its commitment to combating illegal content, including child sexual abuse material, by taking down offending posts and suspending accounts as necessary. The scrutiny surrounding Grok has escalated globally, with regulators in Europe and Asia voicing their concerns about the platform's failure to adhere to online safety standards. In a recent directive, the IT Ministry instructed X to promptly eliminate any unlawful content generated by Grok or face legal repercussions. The ministry demanded a comprehensive report outlining the measures taken to address the issue and ensure compliance with Indian regulations. Concerns have been raised about the potential for Grok to enable users to create fake accounts for sharing derogatory images, raising alarms about the platform's enforcement capabilities. The Indian government clarified that compliance with the IT Act is mandatory and that failure to meet due diligence obligations could result in the loss of legal protections for the platform. Following the IT Ministry's notice, X's initial response was deemed insufficient, prompting the government to seek more detailed information regarding actions taken against obscene content generated by Grok. In light of this, X has now committed to adhering to Indian laws and enhancing its content moderation practices to prevent future violations. Internationally, pressure is mounting on X, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer calling the situation 'disgusting.' Meanwhile, the European Commission has requested that X retain all documentation related to Grok for further analysis. In the United States, three Democratic senators have urged major app stores to consider suspending X and Grok for breaching their terms of service. As the situation develops, X is under scrutiny to ensure user safety and regulatory compliance.
