The social media platform X has recently raised the costs associated with posting links through its API, a move the company claims aims to combat spam and misuse. The new pricing structure has seen the cost per link jump from $0.01 to $0.20. Last week, updates to X’s developer account revealed significant increases in API rates, particularly affecting the pricing for posting links and general posts, which now costs $0.15 each. These adjustments are intended to encourage better practices among developers and reduce instances of misuse. This price hike may deter many publications from including links in their posts. For example, Techmeme, a tech news aggregator, has opted to remove direct links from its updates on X, now prompting users to visit their site instead for full context. The publication noted that the recent API changes were a contributing factor to its decision, alongside a Nieman Lab study indicating that including links often led to decreased engagement. In response to the changes, Techmeme's founder, Gabe Rivera, expressed concerns that news outlets could face significant costs or be forced to manually post links. He questioned whether X is effectively telling news sites they must pay hundreds of dollars monthly if they wish to tweet links automatically. X’s head of product, Nikita Bier, has disputed the findings of the Nieman Lab study, suggesting that the accounts analyzed were primarily those that posted headlines with links without adding further context. He challenged Techmeme to present evidence of user reactions to the changes, emphasizing that successful link sharing requires integrating linked content into posts more organically. This ongoing debate about X's impact on link visibility isn't new. The platform previously experimented with removing headlines from link previews but reverted back after receiving backlash from users and publishers alike.
