In a decisive move to combat the spread of fake accounts and enhance user engagement, X, under the leadership of Elon Musk, has announced the removal of essential features from its developer API for users on the free tier. This change means that those utilizing the free plan will no longer be able to like posts or follow other users through the API. The company asserts that these adjustments are aimed at safeguarding the platform from spam, bot activity, and other manipulative behaviors that detract from the overall user experience. Developers who subscribe to paid plans, including Basic, Pro, or Enterprise tiers, will retain access to all functionalities. While this restriction could significantly reduce programmatic abuses, it also presents a challenge for developers running legitimate projects who may now feel pressured to transition to paid subscriptions. X has undergone several changes to its API system since Musk's takeover, initially terminating free access with little notice before reversing course to allow some degree of free usage. When the new API pricing structure was introduced in the spring of 2023, it became evident that the company was focusing on revenue generation. The most basic plan was designed primarily for users of “good bots,” which are automated accounts that provide valuable information such as weather updates. Furthermore, in October, X raised the pricing for its basic tier from $100 to $200 per month, along with implementing higher limits on usage.
