Grok’s AI image generator blocked for general X users after massive backlash

Elon Musk's social media platform, X, previously known as Twitter, has recently come under fire for its AI image generator, Grok, which faced backlash due to the creation of manipulated images of women. In response to widespread criticism and potential regulatory scrutiny, the platform has decided to restrict access to Grok's image generation and editing capabilities exclusively to paying subscribers. This significant shift means that the majority of users on X will no longer have access to these features, a move aimed at mitigating misuse. Grok's current statement emphasizes that 'Image generation and editing are currently limited to paying subscribers.' By implementing this change, X seeks to establish a digital record of every image produced, linking real-world identities to generated content through payment methods like credit cards or bank details. This approach raises concerns for users, as any illegal or non-consensual content generated can now be traced back to individuals, eliminating their anonymity. Musk further stated that individuals who prompt Grok to produce illegal content will face the same repercussions as if they had uploaded such material directly. X is also grappling with the threat of regulatory actions across various regions, particularly in the UK, following instances where Grok's AI was found to generate non-consensual sexual imagery. Over the past two weeks, Grok reportedly created multiple sexualized AI images of women without their consent, prompting international calls for stricter controls. Reports suggest that X could face hefty fines and operational restrictions in the UK for violating the Online Safety Act if these issues are not addressed promptly.
