X now offers an MCP server to make its platform easier for AI tools to use

X is enhancing the accessibility of its platform for AI applications with the introduction of a new hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. This initiative, announced on Monday, allows AI tools such as Claude, Cursor, and Grok Build to connect directly to the X API using individual user account permissions, making integration significantly easier. Previously, developers faced the cumbersome task of creating and hosting their own MCP servers to enable AI assistants to interact with X. They had to manage the connection to the X API and handle authentication processes on their own. With the new hosted MCP server, X takes on this responsibility, allowing developers to focus more on their projects rather than on integration challenges. The platform has long permitted developers to search for content, analyze trends, and engage with posts through its API. However, the newly introduced hosted MCP server simplifies these interactions, positioning X as a dynamic information network that provides real-time data for analysis instead of merely a social platform. This move aligns X with other tech giants like GitHub, Slack, Notion, Stripe, and Salesforce, all of which have established their own MCP servers or endpoints. Nonetheless, the easing of infrastructure requirements raises concerns about potential increases in automated posting and spam. It is crucial to note that the hosted MCP continues to adhere to X's API regulations, which restrict usage in cases of detected spam-like behavior. Earlier this year, X updated its API v2 to tackle the issue of AI-generated spam, particularly regarding automated replies. Additionally, the company adjusted its API pricing, raising the cost to publish posts to $0.015 and links to $0.20. These price hikes aim to deter misuse of the platform, making spamming a more costly endeavor.
