In a bid to combat the ongoing challenge posed by bots and promote originality, X, the social media platform, is rolling out innovative video editing and recording capabilities. This initiative aims to motivate creators to produce unique content rather than relying on repurposed material from others. The latest update features exciting tools, such as the ability to overlay captions in multiple languages and personalize their appearance. Additionally, users can utilize a green-screen function that allows them to set custom backgrounds sourced from their camera roll or other posts on X. Nikitia Bier, X’s head of product, expressed the company’s commitment to equipping creators with essential tools to foster originality and reward their efforts. “We have plenty more updates coming to the video editor in the coming weeks,” Bier stated. Bier emphasized the goal of providing a "functional" video editor to facilitate the creation of content that is distinctly original and not found on competing platforms. He highlighted the issue of recycling prevalent among top accounts on X, with some unauthorized content lingering for years after it originally gained popularity. While a new video editor is a step in the right direction, experts agree that it alone cannot solve the rampant issue of content theft. To cultivate a vibrant ecosystem for creators, X must ensure that these individuals can effectively reach and monetize a genuine audience. Many creators are drawn to platforms like TikTok, Meta, and YouTube, which offer more structured environments with reliable payment systems. X may need to rethink its creator engagement strategies, especially after Bier's recent criticisms directed at prominent YouTube creator Mr. Beast, suggesting the need for more meaningful content that isn't solely financially driven. Moreover, X is currently lacking tools that allow creators to report and take action against content theft, a feature that competitors like Meta provide for their Reels creators. For example, Meta enables original creators to restrict visibility on stolen content or add links for attribution to earn money from their work. YouTube also offers tools to help creators identify and remove unauthorized reposts. Another pressing challenge for X remains the significant presence of bots, which not only inflate view counts but also engage in content scraping and theft. Bier noted that in April, X was suspending approximately 208 bots every minute, highlighting the scale of the issue. The product team is reportedly dedicating half of its efforts to developing features that tackle spam. Bier explained the rationale behind the new video editor beyond merely competing with TikTok. Posts with videos currently account for nearly half of the impressions on X, indicating the importance of this feature to the platform's overall strategy. X is not alone in facing the spam epidemic; other networks like Reddit are also employing AI solutions to manage the increasing volume of bot-generated content. Meanwhile, the startup Digg recently ceased operations, citing its inability to combat spam effectively. Currently, the new video editor and recorder are available on X's iOS app, with plans for an Android version to follow as development continues.
