X’s encrypted DM feature, XChat, is rolling out more broadly

X is expanding the availability of its highly anticipated encrypted direct messaging feature, XChat, to a larger audience. Initially launched in beta back in May, XChat is now accessible to more users, even those who do not hold an X Premium subscription. This new messaging system operates separately from the traditional DM inbox and employs end-to-end encryption to enhance user privacy. XChat allows users to share media files, engage in group conversations, pin important messages, and manage message statuses by marking them as read or unread. Additionally, there are whispers of a vanishing mode being developed to further bolster privacy options. Currently, users must opt in to utilize XChat. On desktop, some users can find it by navigating to the messages tab and selecting "Chat" from a dropdown menu above the "Message requests." For mobile users, the "Chat" option is conveniently located in the main navigation bar on the left, positioned just above Communities. To start using XChat, users need to establish a four-digit code to secure their messages, mirroring the security measures seen on other encrypted platforms like Signal. Only after this code is set can users begin communicating with others who have also chosen to opt in. It’s important to note that XChat does not entirely replace the existing DM system; instead, previous messages will now be categorized under an "unencrypted" tab within the chat menu.
