In a significant move to combat misinformation, X has announced that it will penalize creators who share AI-generated videos related to armed conflicts without proper disclosure. Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, revealed on Tuesday that individuals who mislead audiences with such content will face a suspension from the platform's Creator Revenue Sharing Program for a period of 90 days. The company emphasized the importance of providing accurate information during wartime, with Bier stating, "With today’s AI technologies, it is trivial to create content that can mislead people." Effective immediately, any user who posts AI-created videos of armed conflict without indicating that the content was generated through AI will be temporarily barred from monetizing their posts. If these creators continue to violate the policy after their suspension ends, they risk permanent removal from the revenue-sharing initiative. X plans to identify misleading posts by leveraging advanced tools tailored to detect generative AI content, alongside its community-driven fact-checking system, Community Notes. The Creator Revenue Sharing Program was designed to incentivize content creation by allowing users to earn money based on the popularity of their posts. However, critics argue that it fosters a culture of sensationalism, encouraging clickbait and inflammatory content. Additionally, concerns have been raised about the program's content moderation practices and the requirement for creators to have X subscribers to participate. Despite these new measures, the ease with which AI can generate misleading media means that the ban on monetizing such content may only address part of the issue. Outside of wartime scenarios, AI-generated media continues to play a role in political misinformation and deceptive marketing practices, which remain unchecked under the updated policy.
