X brings back Voice Notes to X Chat

X has reintroduced the Voice Notes feature within its direct messaging platform, X Chat, allowing users to send audio messages once again. Announced late Wednesday, this update comes after a brief hiatus from public voice note sharing, focusing instead on private conversations. Users can now easily record voice messages in both individual and group chats by tapping the voice input icon located next to the text entry box. Initially, users must press the button to record, but a simple press-and-hold gesture followed by a swipe up enables hands-free recording, making it more user-friendly. This addition is a strategic move for X Chat as it aims to compete with other messaging applications where voice note functionality has long been a staple. The return of this feature is particularly timely following the recent launch of X Chat as a standalone app, which faced criticism for removing the Voice Notes option. The update follows beta tests of the X Chat app on iOS, which provided users with enhanced direct messaging capabilities. Although X asserts that its chats are end-to-end encrypted, experts have raised concerns about the overall security compared to other messaging platforms like Signal. The launch of Voice Notes is part of a broader strategy by X, led by Elon Musk, who envisions transforming the platform into an all-encompassing 'everything app.' In addition to Voice Notes, X is exploring other features and services, such as X Money, which is also being developed into a separate app. Since its inception in November, the new chat platform has been gradually rolling out features, including message editing, deletion, screenshot notifications, file sharing, and voice and video calls, alongside the newly available voice messaging.
