World Labs lands $200M from Autodesk to bring world models into 3D workflows

World Labs, founded by prominent AI researcher Fei-Fei Li, has successfully raised $200 million from Autodesk, a leading name in software design. This collaboration aims to integrate World Labs' advanced AI models, capable of generating and reasoning about immersive 3D environments, with Autodesk's suite of tools, particularly targeting entertainment applications. The investment is part of a broader funding round for World Labs, which emerged from stealth mode in 2024, securing a valuation of $1 billion with an initial raise of $230 million. Sources indicate that the startup is now negotiating further investment at a staggering $5 billion valuation. For World Labs, the backing from Autodesk signals a strong market interest in its innovative products. Their flagship offering, Marble, launched last November, allows users to create and modify 3D environments easily. Autodesk is renowned for its development of 3D CAD software, which serves various industries including architecture, engineering, and entertainment. The investment in advanced spatial AI aligns perfectly with Autodesk's core mission. Li emphasized the synergy between the two companies, stating, "Autodesk has long helped people think spatially and solve real-world problems. Together, we aim to create physical AI that enhances human creativity, providing powerful tools for designers and creators." In addition to the investment, Autodesk will act as an advisor to World Labs, focusing on collaborative research and model development. Daron Green, Autodesk’s chief scientist, noted that while the partnership is still in its infancy, they envision a future where models from both companies can be utilized interchangeably. For instance, users could start with a world model from World Labs to sketch an office layout and refine specific design elements using Autodesk’s technology. The initial focus of their collaboration will be on media and entertainment, as both companies recognize the potential of world models in gaming and interactive experiences. Autodesk's existing relationships with major media production companies position them well to leverage this emerging technology. Green elaborated on the existing overlap between their work and world models, highlighting character animations that respond to physical constraints, showcasing how these elements can be combined with World Labs' technology. This partnership is part of Autodesk's broader strategy to incorporate AI features across its software offerings. The company is currently developing "neural CAD," a generative AI model designed to understand geometric data and generate functional 3D models. Integrating World Labs' models could enhance this capability, moving towards comprehensive digital representations of physical environments. Looking ahead, Green anticipates a future where various AI systems, including language models and world models, converge to improve design solutions for Autodesk’s clients. As Li aptly stated, "If AI is to be truly useful, it must understand worlds, not just words. The interplay of geometry, physics, and dynamics represents the next significant challenge for AI development."
