Wonder Studios, backed by OpenAI, DeepMind execs, raised $12M to bring AI content to Hollywood

Wonder Studios, an AI-driven creative studio based in London, has successfully raised $12 million in seed funding aimed at enhancing its production capabilities as it seeks to integrate AI-generated content into the entertainment sector. The funding round was spearheaded by Atomico, with participation from existing investors like LocalGlobe and Blackbird, building upon a previous pre-seed investment that involved executives from notable firms such as ElevenLabs, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI. The new capital will enable Wonder Studios to double its engineering workforce and accelerate its efforts in acquiring intellectual property (IP) rights while producing original content. Recently, the studio created an AI-generated music video for Lewis Capaldi's song 'Something in the Heavens,' in collaboration with DeepMind, YouTube, and Universal Music Group. Additionally, Wonder has launched its first original project, the anthology series “Beyond the Loop.” Looking ahead, Wonder has a slate of commercial and original projects set for release next year, including a documentary in partnership with Campfire Studios, the team behind Netflix's documentaries such as “The Menendez Brothers” and “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders.” Notably, Campfire's CEO, Ross Dinerstein, is also an investor in Wonder Studios. As the push for IP ownership intensifies, the studio enters a landscape marked by increasing legal challenges from Hollywood producers against AI companies over the use of their content for training models and generating outputs with copyrighted characters. Companies like Disney and Universal Studios have taken legal action against entities such as MiniMax and AI image generator Midjourney. In the context of this evolving industry, Netflix has committed to fully embracing generative AI to enhance the efficiency of storytelling. However, the integration of AI into entertainment remains contentious, with many artists expressing concerns about tools powered by large language models (LLMs) being trained on their work without permission, potentially jeopardizing their jobs. OpenAI's Sora 2 has faced scrutiny for replicating actors' likenesses without consent. Wonder Studios aims to be a transformative force in the industry, branding itself as “Hollywood without borders.” The startup's platform connects a community of creators with career opportunities, collaborators, and essential resources. Justin Hackney, the chief commercial officer and co-founder of the studio, stated, “The next decade will define what creativity looks like in the age of AI. Our mission is to ensure that this future belongs to the storytellers. By collaborating with leading studios, industry innovators, and grassroots filmmakers, we’re building a bridge where technology and artistry can flourish together.”
