In a surprising turn of events, OpenAI's proposed acquisition of the popular AI startup Windsurf has fallen through, as reported by The Verge. Following this development, Google DeepMind has made headlines by recruiting Windsurf's CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and other key members of their AI coding team. A representative from Google confirmed the hiring of these leaders, expressing enthusiasm about the influx of talent. "We’re excited to welcome some top AI coding talent from Windsurf’s team to Google DeepMind to advance our work in agentic coding," said Chris Pappas, a Google spokesperson, in an email to TechCrunch. It's important to note that Google is not acquiring any ownership stake in Windsurf and will not exert control over the company. However, the tech giant has secured a nonexclusive license for certain technologies developed by Windsurf, allowing the startup to continue licensing its innovations to other entities. This situation marks yet another instance of a reverse-acquihire in the AI sector, where larger companies attract top talent from startups while licensing their technology rather than pursuing a full acquisition. Similar arrangements have previously been made by Google and Microsoft with other AI leaders, allowing them to enhance their capabilities without attracting regulatory attention. Mohan and Chen expressed their excitement about joining Google DeepMind, stating, "We are proud of what Windsurf has built over the last four years and are excited to see it move forward with their world-class team and kick-start the next phase." In the meantime, Jeff Wang, Windsurf’s head of business, has stepped up as the interim CEO, as confirmed through a social media announcement. While a significant portion of Windsurf's 250 employees will remain with the startup, continuing to provide their AI coding tools for enterprise clients, this story is still evolving.
