Your flagship Android may not support Google’s Gemini Intelligence: Here’s why

On May 12, Google introduced Gemini Intelligence as part of the Android 17 update, promising to enhance smartphones with intelligent and interactive AI capabilities. However, the rollout of this advanced technology may not extend to all high-end Android devices due to strict hardware prerequisites. Reports indicate that even flagship models like the Google Pixel 9 series and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 may not support Gemini Intelligence. Users are left questioning the specific requirements necessary for their devices to benefit from this innovative AI upgrade. According to Google, the Gemini Intelligence feature mandates 'the most advanced capabilities and spec requirements.' This implies that devices need to be equipped with AI Core and Nano v3 or newer models to utilize its full potential. Additionally, users can expect enhanced media experiences, including spatial audio, optimized low-light performance, and HDR gaming. To ensure robust functionality, Gemini Intelligence requires a minimum of 12GB of RAM and a top-tier processor. Devices must also be capable of receiving at least five Android version updates and six years of quarterly security enhancements, along with meeting certain quality standards for stability and performance. Google has detailed the compatibility criteria for devices that support Nano v3 on its developer page. This suggests that only the latest devices, such as the Pixel 10 series, Oppo Find X9 series, Vivo X300 series, and Galaxy S26 series, are likely to fully integrate Gemini Intelligence. Consequently, while last year's flagship models might receive the Android 17 update, they may not have access to the Gemini features. Nonetheless, the developer page does mention support for an API, which allows developers to tap into certain AI functionalities, indicating that older flagship phones could still enjoy some Gemini AI capabilities, even if they don't meet all specifications for full Nano v3 support. Despite these limitations, Google has confirmed that Gemini Intelligence will initially launch on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices later this year, hinting that the Galaxy Z Fold 8 may debut with Android 17 features in tow.
