AI or not, Will Smith’s crowd video is fresh cringe

Will Smith recently shared a video on social media showcasing enthusiastic fans cheering for him during his European tour. In his post, he expressed gratitude, stating, "My favorite part of the tour is seeing you all up close. Thank you for seeing me too." The footage features large crowds, with fans holding signs declaring their admiration, including one touching message indicating that his music helped someone through cancer. However, the video has stirred controversy due to its uncanny appearance. While it initially seems genuine, a closer look reveals distorted facial features, awkward finger placements, and other peculiarities that led many to speculate whether the footage was enhanced or created using AI. This situation poses a significant challenge for Smith, whose reputation has already been marred in recent years. Critics argue that if Smith were using AI to fabricate impressive concert visuals or exaggerate personal stories from fans, it would be unjustifiable. Yet, there is no concrete evidence that the fans themselves are not real. Tech blogger Andy Baio highlighted that Smith has previously shared other images and videos featuring the same fans and signs, which do not exhibit any signs of digital manipulation. The new video appears to combine authentic footage with AI-generated elements, raising questions about its integrity. Unfortunately, social media users might not take the time to dissect Smith's past posts to verify the legitimacy of the crowd's enthusiasm. Instead, the prevailing sentiment is that he is misleading fans by showcasing fabricated moments, leading to a perception of insincerity. Compounding the issue, YouTube has introduced a feature designed to enhance clarity on Shorts, which unintentionally made Smith's video seem even less authentic compared to content on other platforms. Despite the potential for creative video editing, the public shows a growing skepticism towards the use of generative AI in artistic expressions. Fans often feel betrayed when they discover that their favorite artists have employed techniques that obscure the truth. For instance, if a pop star's appealing sound is solely due to autotuning, or if a beauty advertisement features heavily edited images, it can lead to feelings of deception. Once trust is eroded between an artist and their audience, it becomes challenging to rebuild that connection, even for someone as beloved as Will Smith.
