Microsoft exec suggests AI agents will need to buy software licenses, just like employees

In a thought-provoking discussion at a recent conference, Microsoft executive Rajesh Jha proposed a revolutionary idea: as artificial intelligence continues to advance, AI agents might require their own software licenses, similar to human employees. This raises a pivotal question: should these digital agents be classified as employees? Jha's assertion suggests that the future workforce may consist of more AI agents than humans. He posited that each of these agents could be treated as individual software users, necessitating their own logins and licenses. This perspective could potentially shift the way software revenue is generated, indicating that rather than diminishing sales, AI could actually broaden the market for software licenses. For instance, a company with 20 employees traditionally purchases 20 Microsoft 365 licenses. If each employee is supported by five AI agents, that same organization could still need to pay for 50 licenses, even if the human workforce is reduced to 10. However, not everyone agrees with this outlook. Nenad Milicevic, a partner at AlixPartners, argues that the rise of AI agents could lead to a significant decrease in the number of human interactions with software, ultimately reducing the need for licenses. He suggests that instead of a large team, one individual might manage multiple AI agents, which could lead to a decline in software license purchases. This debate touches on critical issues in software pricing models, as vendors may face pressure from customers who find existing pricing structures illogical. Milicevic points out that open platforms could emerge as the beneficiaries in this scenario, as businesses could charge additional fees for machine-based access but risk losing clientele to competitors offering more flexible options for AI integration. The central dilemma remains: if AI agents are merely extensions of their human counterparts, charging for their licenses could seem like double billing. Conversely, if they are viewed as autonomous entities, then licensing fees may become a necessary reality. The resolution of this issue could significantly influence the dynamics of software economics in the coming decade.
