Wikipedia pauses AI summary trial after editor community uproar

The Wikimedia Foundation has decided to suspend its trial of AI-generated summaries on the mobile version of Wikipedia, following a significant backlash from its community of editors. One editor expressed deep concern, stating, 'Just because Google has rolled out its AI summaries doesn’t mean we need to one-up them. I sincerely beg you not to test this, on mobile or anywhere else.' Many voiced their opposition vehemently, with comments describing the initiative as a 'very bad idea' and expressing strong disapproval. Critics highlighted the potential for inaccuracies and biases in the AI-generated content, particularly without adequate community oversight. An editor raised an important point, arguing that the proposal would elevate a single editor's influence—who may have known biases—over the article's content while sidelining the community's editorial control. In light of the overwhelming feedback, the Wikimedia Foundation announced a pause in the rollout but reaffirmed its commitment to exploring generative AI as a future tool. A spokesperson emphasized that the goal of the trial was to improve accessibility for users worldwide, stating, 'This two-week, opt-in experiment was focused on making complex Wikipedia articles more accessible to people with different reading levels.'
