Wikipedia, often hailed as a bastion of reliable information in an increasingly chaotic online landscape, is now experiencing a notable dip in human traffic. According to a recent blog post by Marshall Miller from the Wikimedia Foundation, pageviews have plummeted by 8% year-over-year. This decline has been partially attributed to an update in Wikipedia’s bot detection systems, which revealed that a significant portion of the elevated traffic during May and June was generated by bots designed to bypass detection. Miller highlighted that the ongoing trend of decreasing traffic is influenced by the evolving nature of information-seeking behaviors, particularly among younger audiences who are turning to social media platforms and AI-driven search engines for immediate answers rather than visiting traditional websites like Wikipedia. While Google has contested the claim that AI-generated summaries are detracting from Wikipedia's traffic, Miller acknowledges the profound effects of generative AI and social media on how knowledge is consumed. He emphasized that these changes do not diminish Wikipedia's relevance; information sourced from the encyclopedia continues to reach audiences, even if they are not directly visiting the site. Wikipedia had previously trialed AI-generated summaries, but this initiative was halted due to feedback from its editors. Miller warns that this shift poses risks, notably the potential decline in the community of volunteers who enhance and expand Wikipedia's content. He stated, "With fewer visits to Wikipedia, fewer volunteers may grow and enrich the content, and fewer individual donors may support this work." To combat this trend, Miller advocates for AI and social media companies that leverage Wikipedia's content to drive more traffic to the site. The Wikimedia Foundation is also proactive, developing a new framework for content attribution and assembling teams aimed at attracting new readers. Additionally, they are seeking volunteers to assist in this mission. Miller encourages everyone to prioritize content integrity, advising users to seek out original sources when searching for information online. He stresses the importance of recognizing the contributions of real people behind the content that informs generative AI, urging readers to engage in discussions about the value of trustworthy, meticulously curated knowledge.
