Wikipedia urges AI companies to use its paid API, and stop scraping

In a proactive move to safeguard its resources in the age of artificial intelligence, Wikipedia outlined a strategy on Monday aimed at encouraging AI developers to utilize its content responsibly. The Wikimedia Foundation, which manages the widely-used online encyclopedia, emphasized the importance of proper attribution for its contributions, urging developers to access its resources via the paid Wikimedia Enterprise platform. This subscription-based service is designed to allow companies to leverage Wikipedia's extensive content without overwhelming its servers. By opting for this paid route, AI firms can also contribute to the foundation's nonprofit objectives. Although the organization did not threaten any legal repercussions for misuse of its data through scraping, it highlighted recent incidents where AI bots were found extracting information while attempting to mimic human users. Following enhancements to its bot detection capabilities, Wikipedia reported a spike in traffic attributed to these AI bots in May and June, while genuine human interactions had decreased by 8% compared to the previous year. With an eye on the future, Wikipedia is issuing guidelines for those in the generative AI space, advocating for transparency in information sourcing. "To foster trust in online information, platforms must clarify their sources and encourage visits to those origins," the blog post stated. The foundation expressed concern that declining traffic could hinder the engagement of volunteers and reduce individual donations, ultimately impacting the quality of content. Earlier this year, the Wikimedia Foundation introduced its AI strategy, which aims to assist human editors by automating mundane tasks and enhancing their workflow without replacing their vital roles. This initiative reflects a balanced approach to integrating AI while preserving the integrity of Wikipedia's mission.
