Wikimedia Foundation announces new AI partnerships with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Perplexity and others

In a momentous celebration of its 25th anniversary, the Wikimedia Foundation has unveiled a series of new collaborations with prominent AI technology companies, marking a significant milestone for its commercial initiative, Wikimedia Enterprise. This platform, developed by the foundation, facilitates the large-scale reuse and distribution of content from Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Among the newly revealed partnerships are major players such as Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity, which join the previously announced collaboration with Google from 2022. While some partnerships, including Ecosia, Pleias, and ProRata, have been previously acknowledged, this announcement also introduces new collaborations with Nomic and Reef Media. These partnerships are aimed at helping Wikipedia adapt and thrive in a digital landscape increasingly dominated by AI models that utilize its content to deliver rapid, accurate information to users. Wikimedia Enterprise is designed not only to generate revenue from tech companies using its resources but also to provide these companies with access to Wikimedia projects at the scale and speed required to meet their data demands. Selena Deckelmann, the Chief Product Officer and Chief Technology Officer of the Wikimedia Foundation, emphasized the importance of human-curated knowledge in her statement, saying, "Wikipedia shows that knowledge is human, and knowledge needs humans. Especially now, in the age of AI, we need the human-powered knowledge of Wikipedia more than ever." The foundation also launched a special campaign to commemorate its anniversary, featuring a new docuseries that offers a glimpse into the dedicated efforts of Wikipedia volunteers globally. Additionally, they've created a “25 Years of Wikipedia” time capsule that reflects on the website's journey, narrated by co-founder Jimmy Wales. A livestreamed birthday event is scheduled for January 15 at 4:00 PM UTC, promising a celebration filled with guests, games, and entertainment, accessible via Wikipedia’s YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram channels. Alongside these announcements, the foundation highlighted significant recent advancements, such as enhancements to its technological infrastructure, innovative approaches to AI, and exciting new experiments including games and short-form video content.
