YouTube down: Thousands of users in India, US report issues with platform

On Friday, December 19, 2025, YouTube experienced a significant outage, impacting thousands of users in both India and the United States, as reported by the industry tracking site Downdetector. The outage peaked at 6:51 PM IST, with approximately 3,855 users in India reporting difficulties accessing the platform. Complaints began flooding in around 5:00 PM IST, indicating a growing issue with the popular video streaming service. As the situation evolved, the number of outage reports in India had decreased to just 97 by 7:06 PM IST. Analysis of the complaints revealed that 54% of users were struggling with server connection issues, while 35% faced website-related difficulties. Additionally, 11% of users reported problems specifically related to video streaming. In the United States, the situation was similarly concerning, with over 10,800 outage reports logged by 8:15 AM EDT. This number subsequently dropped to around 7,600 by 8:27 AM EDT, as users continued to experience disruptions. Canada also reported over 1,300 complaints, while the United Kingdom saw more than 3,000 reports of similar issues. Among the complaints in the US, 77% were related to website problems, 16% involved video streaming issues, and 8% concerned application malfunctions. Despite the numerous reports, YouTube has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the outage. As the outage unfolded, social media users took to platform X to share their experiences, jokes, and memes about the situation, with the hashtag #YouTubedown quickly trending. One user humorously noted, 'So YouTube is down... X is the place to check whether it’s just you or a global issue.' The memes highlighted the confusion surrounding videos that continued to play despite the platform being down, showcasing users' creativity in the face of technical difficulties.
