Recent polling data reveals that a significant majority of Americans, nearly 80 percent, are in favor of extending the enhanced premium tax credits associated with the Affordable Care Act (ACA). These critical credits are set to expire at the end of the year, contributing to a contentious funding debate that resulted in the federal government shutdown this week. According to a survey conducted by KFF, 78 percent of respondents support the extension of these tax credits. This includes a striking 92 percent of Democrats and 59 percent of Republicans. Notably, even 57 percent of self-identified MAGA supporters align with this viewpoint, underscoring a rare bipartisan consensus on the issue. A separate analysis released by KFF earlier this week highlighted the severe financial implications if the credits are not renewed. The average monthly premium for ACA Marketplace plans is projected to soar from $888 to $1,904 by 2026, representing a staggering 114 percent increase. The poll also uncovered a concerning trend: many Americans are largely unaware of the potential expiration of these credits. Approximately 60 percent of adults reported having heard either “a little” or “nothing at all” about the impending changes. KFF President and CEO Drew Altman remarked on the disconnect, stating, "There is a hot debate in Washington about the looming ACA premium hikes, but our poll shows that most people in the marketplaces don’t know about them yet and are in for a shock when they learn about them in November." Moreover, the survey indicated that 70 percent of individuals purchasing their own insurance would experience significant financial disruptions if their premiums were to double. Alarmingly, 42 percent of these respondents indicated they would likely forgo health insurance altogether in such a scenario. Currently, over 24 million Americans rely on the ACA Marketplace for their health insurance needs.
