Cloudflare and Amazon Web Services down: Hundreds of users report outage

On Thursday, Cloudflare faced significant outages, impacting numerous online services for hundreds of users across various regions. Many websites that rely on Cloudflare's infrastructure were reported as either partially or completely inaccessible, according to user feedback. Downdetector, a platform that monitors outages, logged over 330 reports from the United States around 7:52 AM IST, highlighting persistent issues. Users experienced a range of problems, including difficulties loading websites and accessing essential platforms that depend on Cloudflare's content delivery and security services. The outage tracker indicated that 56% of users encountered server connection issues, while 31% struggled with website access and 12% faced hosting problems. In tandem, Amazon Web Services (AWS) also reported a spike in disruptions, with more than 340 users in the United States indicating problems at the same time. This suggests instability across multiple cloud and hosting ecosystems. The outage data revealed that 67% of reports were from the us-east-1 region, with 16% from us-east-2 and another 16% from us-west-2. The effects of these outages extended beyond Cloudflare and AWS, with over 450 users reporting issues with Steam around 7:48 AM IST. According to Downdetector, 60% of users faced problems with server connections, while 29% had website access issues and 12% experienced login failures. This follows a prior incident on Tuesday when major platforms, including social media site X and AI chatbot ChatGPT, dealt with widespread disruptions caused by a latent software flaw affecting Cloudflare's systems. Issues also arose for gamers on League of Legends and users of select Google and OpenAI services. Cloudflare's Chief Technology Officer, Dane Knecht, publicly acknowledged the outage on X, expressing regret for the impact on customers and the broader internet community. He explained that the disruptions were caused by a latent bug in a system supporting Cloudflare's bot mitigation tools, which was triggered by a routine configuration update. The company also noted an unusual surge of traffic directed at one of its services earlier that day, contributing to the issues faced by users.
