On Thursday afternoon, a significant disruption affected numerous popular online services, including Spotify, Discord, Google, and Amazon Web Services. This information was reported by Downdetector, a platform that monitors service interruptions across the internet. The issues stemmed from outages within service providers Cloudflare and Google Cloud. A representative from Cloudflare confirmed to CNN that a Google Cloud outage was the root cause of the disruptions, clarifying that their main services remained unaffected. "This is a Google Cloud outage," the representative stated in an email. "A limited number of services at Cloudflare utilize Google Cloud and were impacted. We anticipate their recovery shortly." Google acknowledged the situation, mentioning that they were looking into a service disruption affecting some of their Cloud services. "We are currently investigating a service disruption to some Google Cloud services," a spokesperson said. Users were directed to their public status dashboard for ongoing updates. By Thursday afternoon, Cloudflare reported signs of recovery in their services. In the meantime, a Spotify representative indicated that Google’s Cloud services dashboard could provide insight into the technical issues impacting their streaming platform. Reports of issues on Downdetector for Discord and Google Cloud also began to decline around this time. At the height of the outage, approximately 46,000 Spotify users, 11,000 Discord users, and 14,000 Google Cloud users experienced disruptions, according to Downdetector. Other services, including Snapchat and the AI platform Character.ai, were also reported to be affected. Google Cloud is a vital component of internet infrastructure, claiming to handle 25% of global internet traffic as of 2018. This incident is not the first of its kind; a notable Amazon Web Services outage in 2021 led to widespread disruptions across various sectors, from food delivery to smart home devices. Recently, other major services, including ChatGPT and the social media platform X, have faced similar outages. This story remains ongoing, and updates are expected as the situation develops.
