The Witcher 3is a good game, but that doesn’t mean you have to like it

In an ongoing series, we often reflect on various games, from classics to modern releases. Recently, GOG has made strides to offer DRM-free versions of these titles, ensuring gamers can access them freely. However, I must confess something that may come as a surprise: I do not enjoy The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. This admission might disappoint some, as the game has received widespread acclaim. Back in 2015, when it launched, it sparked intense discussions among critics and fans alike, similar to the buzz surrounding Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in 2025—a title that also failed to capture my interest. The Witcher 3 was celebrated with numerous accolades, and social media was flooded with conversations and memes about its unrivaled quality. Game of the Year awards seemed to pour in endlessly. Yet, despite the hype, I found myself struggling to stay engaged. It took me years to complete the game, as I often lost motivation and felt compelled to continue only to keep up with the community. Friends and fellow gamers were perplexed by my lack of enthusiasm. They’d remind me that I enjoy RPGs, pointing out my fondness for titles like Skyrim and Mass Effect, suggesting that The Witcher 3 should be right up my alley. While I appreciate open-world RPGs, it’s important to acknowledge that each game offers a distinct experience. For me, the RPGs that truly resonate are those where I can craft my own character and narrative, a feature that The Witcher 3 did not fulfill in the way I hoped.
