Sam Altman shares his 'best, accidental' career advice — and why it's the best time to get into computer science

In a recent discussion with Stanford professor Dan Boneh, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman emphasized that there has never been a better time to pursue a career in computer science. Describing the current era as a "cool, high-leverage time," he particularly highlighted the significance of artificial intelligence (AI). Altman asserted that AI is not merely a trending field but is set to become the defining technology of our generation. He expressed his belief that it could remain a pivotal force for an extended period, fundamentally reshaping various aspects of work and society. During the conversation, Altman shared his vision for the future of AI, stating that it is the company's goal to achieve a true automated AI researcher by March 2028. He remarked that he would feel disappointed if OpenAI were not the first major company to be led by an "AI CEO." The OpenAI chief also offered what he referred to as his "best, accidental" career advice: surround yourself with the smartest individuals. He encouraged aspiring professionals to work on compelling problems and maintain a continuous feedback loop to enhance their skills. Reflecting on his own educational journey, Altman argued that the current computer science curriculum in schools needs significant reform to keep pace with the rapid evolution of AI technology. He recalled his experience at Stanford, where he felt the teachings were outdated and did not align with the skills that would be most beneficial in the current landscape. Having dropped out of Stanford after two years to cofound Loopt, a location-sharing social media app, Altman later took the helm at Y Combinator before establishing OpenAI. He commented that the role of those contributing to valuable software development will likely differ markedly from traditional teaching methods. Tech leaders agree with Altman’s perspective on the necessity for educational institutions to adapt swiftly to the changing tides of AI. Andrew Ng, a Stanford professor and co-founder of Google Brain, pointed out that many computer science graduates are facing increased unemployment rates due to universities not updating their curricula in line with the AI boom. Despite the challenges, many industry experts maintain that a solid foundation in computer science remains crucial. OpenAI Chairman Bret Taylor stated that while AI tools are changing coding practices, a computer science degree continues to provide invaluable insights into systems thinking, which is essential for future technological advancements.
