The case for commuting by motorcycle

The case for commuting by motorcycle

In the United States, there exists a misconception surrounding motorcycles. Unlike many parts of the world where two-wheeled vehicles are viewed as practical means of transportation, they are often seen in America as mere recreational toys. This perspective limits their potential as viable options for daily commuting and running errands. Living in Los Angeles, a city notorious for its congested traffic, I have a unique insight into the advantages of using a motorcycle for commuting. One of the significant perks for riders in California is the legal ability to split lanes—navigating between cars on the road—and filter through traffic at stoplights. Coupled with the region's pleasant weather that allows for year-round riding, it makes a strong case for considering motorcycles for everyday use, even if those benefits are not universal across all cities. Take, for instance, the 2025 Ducati Monster SP. This motorcycle epitomizes what a fun and practical commuter bike should be. Weighing just 412 lbs (187 kg) fully fueled, it boasts a powerful 937cc L-twin engine that delivers 111 hp (83 kW) and 69 ft-lb (94 Nm) of torque. Its design features an upright riding position, complemented by high-quality suspension and braking systems from Ohlins and Brembo, respectively. While seasoned riders will appreciate the Monster's impressive specs, non-riders might view it as a speed machine with inherent risks. Fortunately, Ducati has prioritized safety, equipping the bike with an extensive array of electronic rider aids. This includes lean-sensitive anti-lock brakes, traction control, and wheelie control, along with customizable ride modes that adjust throttle sensitivity and power output. These features, combined with its sleek design, make the Monster an outstanding choice for commuters looking for both excitement and practicality on the road.
