Anthropic's Claude is telling users to 'go to bed' — and the internet has theories why

Are you receiving bedtime reminders from Claude? You’re not the only one. Over the past few months, numerous users of Anthropic's AI chatbot have reported on social media that Claude prompts them to 'get some sleep' or 'go rest' after extended conversations. The reason behind this behavior remains unclear, sparking a variety of theories among the online community. One popular suggestion is that Claude has been programmed to prioritize user well-being, aiming to discourage unhealthy dependencies on the chatbot. Some users have humorously compared this behavior to that of an overprotective parent. One Reddit user remarked, "Claude's insistence on bedtime feels reminiscent of my parents when I was irritable," during a discussion about the chatbot's peculiar conduct. Sam McAllister, a member of the Anthropic team, acknowledged this behavior in a recent post, describing it as a "bit of a character tic" and mentioning that the company is aware of it and is working on adjustments for future versions. Some users proposed that Claude's reminders might be linked to the local time when the chat begins. However, McAllister pointed out that this timing can often be inaccurate, leading to sleep suggestions during the day. "It's helpful when it's right, but can feel overly 'coddling' at times," he added. A more skeptical theory posits that Claude might be encouraging users to end conversations as a way to conserve its computing resources. The demand for Claude has surged, leading to multiple outages this year, especially among software developers. Recently, Anthropic secured a partnership with Elon Musk's SpaceX to enhance its computing capacity. While Anthropic has yet to respond to inquiries about these peculiar reminders, Claude's "go to bed" prompts are just the latest instance of quirky AI behavior. Earlier this year, ChatGPT had a phase where it frequently discussed goblins until OpenAI made modifications to its code to curb that tendency. OpenAI explained that this quirk was a result of a "Nerdy" personality setting and highlighted how reward signals can influence model behavior in surprising ways. Regardless of the reason behind Claude's bedtime suggestions, one thing is clear: many of us could indeed benefit from more sleep.
