WhatsApp is piloting an innovative feature known as Private Processing, designed to assist users in managing unread messages within both group and individual chats. This functionality, first identified by WABetaInfo in the beta version of WhatsApp for Android, includes a button labeled “Summarise with Meta AI.” This button activates when users accumulate a significant number of unread messages, allowing them to receive a brief, AI-generated summary of the ongoing conversations. By tapping this button, users can quickly familiarize themselves with the chat's content without needing to scroll through lengthy message threads. Reports indicate that these summaries are created in a manner that prioritizes user privacy. Meta assures users that no content from messages is stored or associated with their accounts. Instead, all data processing occurs within a secure, isolated cloud infrastructure, with information being deleted immediately after the summary is produced. In certain instances, the processing may even take place locally, utilizing encrypted routing and anonymized request handling to further enhance user privacy. Users have control over this AI summary feature, as it is opt-in and can be adjusted through the app’s settings under the Private Processing option. Notably, this feature is automatically disabled in chats that have the “Advanced Chat Privacy” setting activated, catering to users who prefer not to engage with AI functionalities, despite the secure processing methods employed. In addition to chat summarization, WhatsApp is also working on another AI-driven tool called Writing Help, which aims to improve the tone and clarity of messages prior to sending. Like the summarization feature, this tool will function within the Private Processing framework, ensuring robust data protection. Currently, both features are in the testing phase and are available exclusively to a select group of beta testers on Android. WhatsApp has yet to announce a timeline for a wider rollout or support for iOS devices. However, a broader release is anticipated in the upcoming weeks as the company continues to refine these advanced tools.
