New WhatsApp Beta could bring voice conversations with Meta AI

WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is exploring an innovative functionality that could allow Android users to engage in real-time voice conversations with its built-in chatbot, Meta AI. Currently being tested among a select group of beta users, this feature is anticipated to roll out in future updates. According to WABetaInfo, a dedicated resource for tracking WhatsApp developments, this voice chat capability was identified in the latest beta version 2.25.21.21 for Android. Users may soon have the option to initiate conversations with Meta AI by tapping a waveform icon within the chat interface or by switching to voice mode during an ongoing text exchange. Additionally, a new setting under “Voice Preferences” within the app may allow users to automatically enter voice mode when interacting with the chatbot, although this feature is presently turned off by default and only applicable to the chat tab. Interestingly, in the Calls tab, the Meta AI icon is designed to automatically transition to a waveform symbol, facilitating direct voice interaction and aligning the feature with the existing purpose of the tab. Once users activate this function, they will see suggested conversation topics on the screen to help kickstart their interaction. The interface is also expected to feature a collapse icon in the upper left corner, enabling users to minimize the voice chat while multitasking on other applications, much like a regular WhatsApp call. To conclude a voice session, users can simply tap an 'X' icon at the bottom of the screen, exit the chat, or start typing to revert to text mode. Active conversations will be managed through WhatsApp’s in-app call notifications as well as Android’s microphone activity alerts. It’s important to note that this feature is still in its testing phase and is not yet available to the general public, leaving users eager for updates on a wider release.
