WhatsApp introduces message translations for Android and iPhone users

WhatsApp has officially launched a new message translation feature, aimed at dismantling language barriers among its vast user base of over 3 billion individuals spanning more than 180 countries. This innovative tool allows users to simply long-press a message and select 'Translate' to instantly convert it into their chosen language. This functionality is available for one-on-one chats, group discussions, and Channel updates. Users can also save their preferred languages for easier future translations. Furthermore, Android users have the option to enable automatic translation for an entire chat thread, ensuring that all incoming messages are translated by default. This addition is particularly useful in multilingual communities, enhancing the flow of conversation. WhatsApp emphasizes that all translations are processed locally on the user's device, which means that the company does not have access to the messages during translation. This feature aligns with WhatsApp's ongoing commitment to end-to-end encryption and user privacy. The rollout is gradual, beginning with a limited selection of languages. Android users will initially have access to translations in six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. Meanwhile, iPhone users will enjoy support for over 19 languages at launch. Through this new tool, WhatsApp aims to foster deeper connections among users and facilitate smoother communication across different regions. "We hope this feature helps break down language barriers and allows users to connect more deeply with loved ones and communities around the globe," the company stated, highlighting its mission to enhance user interaction in a diverse world.
