WhatsApp makes surprise debut on Apple Watch with voice notes, chat history

In an unexpected move, WhatsApp has introduced a companion application for the Apple Watch, enabling users to manage their messaging experience directly from their wrist. This new feature, launched on Tuesday, allows for the viewing of notifications, reading of messages, and the ability to send and record voice messages without the need to rely on an iPhone. According to WhatsApp's blog post, the app aims to enhance user convenience by streamlining chat management. For the first time, Apple Watch users can read full messages—including longer texts—and respond using voice notes. Additionally, the app supports emoji reactions, mirroring the functionality available on the iPhone app. The Meta-owned messaging platform promises clearer images and stickers on the Apple Watch, alongside the capability to access chat history with conversation partners directly on the device. Importantly, all communications—including messages and calls—will maintain end-to-end encryption, ensuring user privacy remains intact. To utilize this new WhatsApp experience, users must have an Apple Watch Series 4 or newer, equipped with watchOS 10 or a later version. While this launch comes as a surprise, it aligns with WhatsApp's recent focus on enhancing its presence within the Apple ecosystem, which also included the long-awaited introduction of an iPad app earlier this year. In comparison, Snapchat had already released a companion app for the Apple Watch, allowing for notifications and voice messaging. However, it offers limited capabilities relative to WhatsApp, lacking features such as viewing Snaps or accessing full chat histories. Despite its advantages, the WhatsApp Apple Watch app does not include some functionalities like voice and video calls or the option to initiate new chats or view status updates, which may limit its appeal for some users. Nevertheless, this development marks a significant step in making messaging more accessible and convenient for Apple Watch users.
