WhatsApp has rolled out an innovative feature that leverages artificial intelligence to assist users in quickly catching up on unread messages. Known as "Message Summaries," this new function is powered by Meta AI and is designed to provide concise overviews of missed conversations in both individual and group settings. The introduction of Message Summaries emphasizes user privacy, utilizing a unique framework called "Private Processing." This framework ensures that neither WhatsApp nor Meta has access to the content of the messages or the summaries they generate. Summaries are displayed in a bullet-point format and are strictly labeled as "visible only to you," reinforcing the app's commitment to privacy. This feature is particularly beneficial in busy group chats, where users often struggle to navigate lengthy threads of unread messages. With AI-generated summaries, users can quickly grasp the essence of conversations without the need to individually open or read each message. By default, the Message Summaries feature is turned off and requires users to enable it manually. Once activated, eligible chats will display a small icon indicating that a summary is ready for viewing. Notably, these summaries are created on the user's device, adhering to the Private Processing protocol, which ensures that they are never transmitted to external servers. Private Processing is Meta’s advanced computing infrastructure, akin to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, and is founded on a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). It prioritizes several key principles including confidential data handling, protection against tampering, and transparency. If any attempts to compromise the system’s security are detected, the system will either shut down or render the tampering verifiable. Moreover, the framework is designed to support independent audits, allowing verification of Meta’s privacy commitments. Users can also customize which chats are eligible for AI summaries through advanced privacy settings. Importantly, no other participants in the chat will be alerted if someone uses the summary feature. Currently, Message Summaries are being rolled out to users in the United States, with support for the English language. Meta plans to expand this feature to additional languages and regions in the near future, as part of its broader initiative to integrate AI technology across its platforms.
