WhatsApp launches AI summary feature for unread chats. Here's how it works

WhatsApp, a subsidiary of Meta, has rolled out an innovative feature that leverages artificial intelligence to summarize unread messages in private chats. This new capability, named Meta AI, allows users to receive concise, bulleted summaries of their unread conversations, providing a quick overview before diving into the details. In a recent blog post, WhatsApp explained that the feature is designed to help users stay informed without the need to read every message individually. Users will find a new option labeled ‘summarize privately’ in the unread messages section. By selecting this option, Meta AI generates a summary that captures the essence of the unread chats using advanced Private Processing technology. This ensures that user privacy is maintained, as the AI processes messages in a secure environment that prevents external access. According to WhatsApp, the AI can summarize personal chats without any oversight from Meta or WhatsApp, meaning that the contents of the messages and their summaries remain confidential. It’s important to note that this feature is optional and is turned off by default. Moreover, WhatsApp’s “Advanced Privacy” settings restrict the use of AI features in group chats, ensuring that users’ privacy is prioritized. Currently, the AI summarization feature is being launched in English within the United States, with plans to extend its availability to other regions and languages by year’s end. However, there are still questions about the accuracy of the summaries provided by the AI, leaving users wondering if they can fully rely on this new feature. Over the past year, WhatsApp has introduced multiple AI-driven functionalities, including the ability to pose questions directly to Meta AI and real-time image generation, all while maintaining user privacy through its secure cloud environment. As the platform continues to innovate, users can expect more enhancements designed to streamline their messaging experience while safeguarding their privacy.
