WhatsApp rolls out AI-powered 'Writing Help' to rephrase and refine your words

WhatsApp has launched an innovative artificial intelligence feature aimed at helping users enhance their messaging skills. Dubbed “Writing Help,” this tool enables individuals to rephrase, proofread, or modify the tone of their conversations, as announced by the Meta-owned platform on Wednesday. This new feature leverages Meta’s Private Processing technology, which guarantees that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can access users' original messages or the AI-generated suggestions. As the company highlighted, this ensures that user privacy remains intact, even when utilizing the new tool. With Writing Help, users can explore various alternatives in different styles, ranging from professional to humorous, supportive, or simply rephrased messages. In one demonstration, WhatsApp illustrated the functionality with a request to “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa.” The AI provided playful alternatives like “Please don’t make the sofa a sock graveyard,” “Breaking news: Socks found chilling on the couch. Please move them,” and “Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!” The introduction of Writing Help underscores WhatsApp's strategy to keep users engaged within its ecosystem, reducing reliance on external AI writing tools such as ChatGPT. However, not all users may be receptive to this feature. Critics have voiced concerns that while AI tools can be beneficial for professional communications, many people cherish the authenticity of their personal interactions with loved ones. Users can access this feature easily by tapping a pencil icon while composing a message. The rollout will initially occur in English, starting this week in select countries.
