WhatsApp is set to revolutionize the experience for iPad users with a new update that allows them to register their accounts directly from the tablet. Previously, the app functioned only in companion mode, requiring users to connect their iPads to an iPhone or Android device by scanning a QR code. According to WABetaInfo, this update is being rolled out gradually with version 26.25.74 for iPadOS. With this enhancement, some users can now utilize their iPads as their primary WhatsApp device, breaking free from the limitations of companion mode. The previous setup had its drawbacks; users were unable to share live locations, create or view broadcast lists, or interact with businesses through Flows. Additionally, if the primary phone was inactive for 14 consecutive days, all linked devices, including the iPad, would automatically log out. The new setup process for WhatsApp on iPad mirrors that of a smartphone. Users simply need to enter their country code and phone number and await a six-digit verification code. For those who have established a passkey with their account, that option is available as well. Once configured as the primary device, users will enjoy the full range of features without the constraints of companion mode. This means they can share live locations, access broadcast lists, and remain logged in without the risk of being logged out due to inactivity. Importantly, WhatsApp will not eliminate the companion mode. Users who prefer to keep their phone as the main device can continue using it while utilizing the iPad as a secondary option. For first-time setup on the iPad, users will be presented with two choices. Those who have linked their iPads as companion devices won’t need to make any adjustments. Currently, this feature is available to a select group of users, with plans to expand access in the coming weeks. This update marks a significant shift in how WhatsApp can be utilized on the iPad, providing greater flexibility for users who wish to operate from their tablets.
