WhatsApp to launch third-party chat integration in Europe soon

Meta has announced plans to introduce third-party chat integration for WhatsApp users in Europe, as mandated by the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). This new feature will allow users to communicate with contacts on compatible messaging platforms, enhancing the app's functionality and user experience. In a recent blog post, Meta revealed that after conducting successful small-scale tests, the integration would soon be available across Europe. Users will be able to send messages, images, voice notes, videos, and files to individuals using third-party services like BirdyChat and Haiket. This development signifies a crucial step in Meta's compliance with the DMA's interoperability requirements. Starting in the coming months, users who opt into the integration will receive notifications within WhatsApp's “Settings” tab, detailing how to connect with third-party messaging users. However, this feature will only be accessible on mobile devices, specifically Android and iOS, and will not be available on desktop or tablet platforms. The option to connect with third-party apps is entirely voluntary. Users can activate or deactivate third-party chats whenever they choose. The partnerships with BirdyChat and Haiket are the culmination of a three-year collaboration between Meta, these European messaging services, and the European Commission to create a compliant third-party chat solution. Importantly, Meta has assured users that third-party messaging will maintain the same level of end-to-end encryption as WhatsApp. To help users navigate this new feature, Meta will provide clear information regarding the distinctions between standard WhatsApp chats and those with third-party applications. Furthermore, the company plans to introduce a designated folder for these messages or an option for a combined inbox, enhancing user organization and experience. Notifications will also be sent to users whenever a new third-party messaging app is added to the platform.
